Fish Wives

"Fish Wives" follows the route of the traditional herring fishery from Shetland to Great Yarmouth to explore the role of women in the UK fishing industry. In years gone by, "fisher lasses" travelled on land from port to port mirroring the fishermen's route by sea as the herring shoals headed south on their annual migration. The women worked on the quaysides gutting and packing the fish. Nowadays many women still work in the fishing industry in similar roles, but now almost exlusively behind closed doors in fish processing houses along the length of the East Coast.
